It will take place at Canal’s Dance Centre and Rectorado de la Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia. Attendance to the Congress will represent 1 optative credit for students of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Philosophy, History, History of Art, Fine Arts, Modern Languages, Spanish: language and literature, Political Sciencie and Psicology Degrees.

In contrast to dance research which mainly focuses on the analysis of dance from a descriptive point of view and study dance from an historical, social, anthropological or ethnological perspective, we wanted to encourage another research perspective. Thus, we consider dance as a philosophical space that promotes critical analysis within the field of philosophy. For this reason, dance works not just as an object for reflection, a philosophy about dance, but also as a philosophical category, temperament or style: dance as philosophy.

The First International Congress on Philosophy of Dance took place at the Complutense University of Madrid, with the collaboration of Philosophy and Fine Arts Faculties and the Institute for Philosophy of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC), the 28th, 29th and 30th of June 2017.

We aimed to bring together research on the intersection between the disciplines “philosophy” and “dance”. This event created a space to foster synergies between these two fields, with the goal of developing its own field of research.

With more than 70 speakers and workshops organizers, more than 200 people attending and the support from the University’s staff and the collaborating entities, and also Vaciador 34’s assembly (closing day’s venue), the 1st Congress on Philosophy of Dance was a huge sucess in terms of the number of people attending and the quality and diversity of the proposals. We can assert that the goal prosecuted were achieved, because, as we saw, not only philosophy of dance it’s a discipline which is moving forward, but also we had the chance to create a space where we could see how many people is already researching in this field and with such a diversity.

With the same spirit of the first edition, which took place in 2017, this second edition wants to deepen in the developed research lines, and it also proposes new approaches in order to continue with the creation and consolidation of the discipline of Philosophy of Dance in the Spanish-spoken academic, research and artistic context.
