Dance Studies Colloquium for Winter/Spring 2026 - On choreographic visuality
A conversation between Adrian Danchig-Waring (Artistic Director, New York Choreographic Institute & Principal Dancer, New York City Ballet) and Mark Franko. The discussion will center on the state of contemporary ballet, the conditions for creative fertility in dance making, and Danchig -Waring's unique knowledge of and contribution to the repertory of the New York City Ballet, from Balanchine and Robbins to Ratmansky.

Adrian Danchig-Waring is a Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet and Artistic Director of the New York Choreographic Institute. Throughout his career with NYCB, Danchig-Waring has performed an extensive repertoire of works by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, and has collaborated with many of today's most influential choreographers including Lar Lubovitch, Wayne McGregor, Emily Molnar, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Justin Peck, Angelin Preljoca, Alexei Ratmansky, and Pam Tanowitz. He was a founding member of Christopher Wheeldon's company Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company.
Danchig-Waring has been a frequent performer at festivals including the Vail International Dance Festival, Ravello Festival, St. Petersburg’s White Night’s Festival, and Spoleto Festival USA, where he has also curated full evenings of dance. His international career has included gala performances throughout China, South Asia, and Europe, with long term interdisciplinary projects in Sweden and Vietnam. He has appeared in films including Catfish (2010), Figure Studies (2012), and in the PBS broadcast Live from Lincoln Center. He is the producer of a forthcoming feature-length documentary titled MAKE WORK.
Danchig-Waring is an active educator and presenter who brings ballet to diverse audiences. He has served as a host and presenter for NYCB's "On and Off Stage" programs at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Guild Hall East Hampton. He has curated and hosted an annual series at the Catskill Mountain Foundation since 2023. In the fall of 2025, he organized and presented "Visionary Steps: Balanchine & Beyond the Contemporary" at Yale Schwarzman.
